Materials & responsibility - Our approach since 2012. We have taken material and environmental aspects into account in the development of our products ever since the company was founded in 2012. Early on, we began using materials based on recycled PET bottles. To this day, we keep developing our products and materials further and work with various partners to do so.

Our recycling methods

PET recycling

That's how it all started: since 2012, we have been using selected materials made from recycled PET bottles in our school backpacks and accessories. Depending on the model, the outer fabric consists partly or entirely of recycled PET from post-consumer waste; you can find the exact percentages in the respective product description. According to our own calculations, more than 100 million PET bottles have been used as raw material for this since 2012. Today we are taking this approach further and are examining additional recycling and material solutions for upcoming collections.

Scrap nylon recycling

In 2019, with the Bondi Beach Special Edition, we launched our first school backpack whose outer fabric was made from 100% ECONYL® regenerated nylon. The material is obtained from nylon waste such as fishing nets, fabric scraps, carpets and industrial plastics.

Cloth scrap recycling

With the Collected Grey Edition, we launched a product line in 2022 that was made to a large extent from fabric scraps from our own production. All styles in the edition are certified with the official 'Green Button' seal. BLOOM™ Foam is also used in the shoulder and hip straps of the satch pack Collected Grey – a foam based partly on algae.

Clothes recycling

Textiles become new materials: since the 2024 collection, we have been using textile-recycled materials in selected products. For the outer fabric of our Skandi styles, used polyester textiles are chemically processed and spun into new yarn. We are expanding this approach in new collections and using it in more and more products.

PFC-free waterproofing

Our school backpacks might not be suitable for diving, but they’re perfect for a rainy walk to school. And you’ll love the water-repellent, 100% PFC-free waterproofing! Why PFC-free? PFC-chemicals are suspected to cause cancer, and they aren’t biodegradable, so we've eliminated them from our production processes in the name of protecting the environment.

In 2016, together with our sister brands Affenzahn and ergobag, we were awarded the German Sustainability Award – a company award, not a product certification. For us, this award is further motivation to keep developing our products, materials and processes.
